Smart START


While every child on the spectrum is different, there is a general flow to initial program development and implementation. We call it "Smart Start™"


    Share information. We begin our work with a family by conducting a telephone interview. We use this as a way of introducing you to our organization, Learning about your child's particular needs and discussing your expectations. Following this initial conversation, we will mail you a copy of our information packet that lays out our philosophy and services in greater detail.

    Meet with us in person. A consultant will come to your home to interact with and observe your child, review relevant data and give an overview of what Pieces of the Puzzle has to offer. At this meeting, we will gladly answer any remaining questions you may have and begin the all-important process of building a rapport with your child.

    Assess your child's functional skills. Establishing your child's baseline skill levels is very important. We will use various protocols addressing receptive language, expressive language, play skills, conversation skills, theory of mind, executive functioning, self help skills, motor skills and social skills.

    Recruit therapists to work with your child. While we do not officially do recruiting for our clients, we can be of some help in this process if you would like. Additionally, your consultant may have time to work as a part-time therapist in your program as well.

    Train you, your therapists and anyone else who will be spending a lot of time with your child so that no developmental opportunities are missed. As you will soon discover, ABA at its best is a lifestyle.

    START implementing your child's ABA program. Before this occurs your consultant will have a good idea of how best to work with your child and what skill areas to focus on for initial programming. Your consultant will also give you advice on where best to prepare a therapy area and what initial supplies you will need.
